Well the time has come to get rid of the god awful kawasaki purple and pinky mauve colour. Got the tank stripped and ready to prime, fingers crossed it'll look ok when done, but then again it cant look much worse than the original colours.
Not sure whether to just paint it solid black or go for the red and black of my old gpz600 (i liked that combination), still undecided on the frame colour aswell, silver like standard or matt black.

Yeah the red on the XJ650 caught me out, looked good on the tin but more orange once sprayed. I'm also thinking silver for frame so it breaks it up a bit.

Well paint work is in the final stages and hopefully not looking to bad for an aerosol respray. Picture of tank after Lacquer coat had dried. Tried to get a close up of the finish and this was the result, Should look good when polished up. Should all be done in the next couple of weeks, then leave it for a few weeks to harden off.

Im glad you've posted this actually, I did think about spraying mine black before, because its easier to get a decent looking finish with black as apposed to lighter colours, instead of paying hundreds of pounds to get it done at a shop. What paint did you use? Oh yeah, its looking good btw

What paint did you use? Oh yeah, its looking good btw I used cellulose paint from John Davey on cannon park. (Thanks greenman) www.johndaveypaints.co.uk/homeI was just going to use cellulose for the tank as its quite resistant to petrol, but ended up using it for the whole bike. I used a good few coats and then flattened the paint with 1200 wet n dry before the lacquer coat and it comes up like glass. One problem with the lacquer is its not very petrol resistant but the paint marks to easy without it, to give it a bit more protection i will be using insulator wax so it will have that bit of extra protection. shop.autobritedirect.co.uk/collinite-845-insulator-wax---1-pint-118-p.asp

Things are moving along slowly, had a few reaction problems with the paint but got most things painted now. Belly pan giving me some problems but hopefuly sorted with this next attempt. Front mudguard still needs to come of and be painted, so started to refit what i can to make a bit of working space, still need to finish t-cutting before polishing but its easier when parts are fitted. Looks better than pink and purple i think.

Christ, it looks brand new. I think you have really done a great job there. The new colour has really freshened the bike up. Have you had a go at the front fork lowers as well ? They look brand new as well. Great work

what else did you find wrong with it once it was in bits?

Nothing really it was in quite good nick underneath. Front brakes were sticking a bit so put new calliper seals in, the rest was just regular maintenance stuff really. Next time i have to do the fork seals i`ll probably replace fork bushes at same time.
