A lot of people my age 17 to 21 will feel it hard when it comes to car insurance! I've got 1.4 i-DSI Honda Jazz SE CVT7 and before i passed it was costing me over 1k to insure I know a lot of people will be shocked and I was my self and thought it will drop when i passed, when I did pass and got quotes ........ over 6k for the car! and it made no difference if i was additional driver! Lucky I came across an article in the Daily Mail now some insurance people are putting GPS in your car to see how you drive! the better you drive you get rewards to spend in shops like halfords or high street shops and if you drive like bat out of hell they ask for more money or cancelled your insurance and remember this gets passed on the other insurance companies so you might not get insured again until your over 21! if you don't do all the millage you claim you where going to do and drove good you get credited back at the end of the year! my quote fell over 3k! over words made it fall by half! (this was with insure the box) me as main keeper and main driver! and it was cheaper than additional driver by 200 pounds! worth looking at, am not sure about bikes though! another tip look around you'll keep finding better! and I've notice these so called first time insurance company nothing more than a con! they offering the most than other big name insurance people! happy insurance hunting hope this helps a lot of poeple!

Well done on looking around and reducing the cost by 50%, and being prepared to do something about it.
It is still a lot of money to pay out at your age, but be sensible and still have fun. You will get the benefits soon.
Safe driving / riding, James.

Yer, a lot of poeple would bring out some crazy suggestions that they would never have one of these 'black boxes' in there car or bike. but thats coz there crazy drivers/riders and they know it. same argument as speed cameras. if your not speeding and have nothing to worry about they shouldnt bother you. saying that, not everyone is a saint my self included. But while your just starting out at driving its good to know that when you have your mates in and your abouts to do something stupid you might htink twice when you realise that box is in there. And that might just save you a crash, or your life. And by the sounds of it, it's saved you a bit too. Insurance isnt cheap, mine dropped by quite a bit as im a volunteer youth worker so they think im sensible (which i am I will pay £1000 on a 5 door fiesta this year, with 0 no claims. still though, i guess there are a lot of nutty 17-25 year olds bumping our premium up.

You could always get a cheaper car. I have a Citroen C2 (group 1 insurance) and only paid £350 for me and a 17 year old and a 19 year old - fully comp! Group 1 cars are much cheaper to insure than others - sounds obvious but the difference is huge, which is why I got the C2

Well my friend has c1 they were asking almost the same as the jazz and i went for the jazz! Also ive notice insurance groups have changed the jazz went from 3 to 10! Well in daily mail they saying before you can touch a 2 litre car you need few years ncb and be over 25 so no wonder they asking so much for 3.2 or 3.5 v6 legend my parents have 2.3 VTEC Shuttle/Odyssey and they saying 19 or older and full lience before quoting

Its a nice idea but as jp says crazy people know they are crazy drivers, ill admit to opening my bike up (If thats the right term on my thing ) on certain long straight stretches of road and some not so straight which im sure the insurance wouldnt approve of, mine was horrible enough at 1.5k but thats with a cbt and no ncb and my bikes a group 6 for some unknown reason

I do feel sorry for you guys when i past my test in car and bike i never paid anything even close to the pounds you are saying, thinking back im sure i have never paid over £400 for any insurance, The problem is the insurance companys put all learners/youngsters in the same catagory that they are a bad risk and then they all get there big fat bonus from you guys. Would it make a difference if you paid for an advance driver training course? If you can afford that amount that they ask then you can surly afford advanced training?

Agree with you Steve about how much I paid when I passed my test. I was paying £220 Fully Comp last year for a 225bhp Audi TT
My son is 18 in June and doing his test next week the cheapest quote I can get on a 2001 'Y' Renault Clio is £3780 ----
No wonder some youngsters are driving about with no Insurance (He will have to stay as a named driver rather than have his own car)

Well the advance training i talked it over with my driving tutor before i passed and he said barely makes any difference! I've tried all type of cars, corsa for 1000 and asking more than the car and i've tried C1 and same again and as I like my Honda's tried the Jazz it was lower for some reason! they is no pattern in the insurance, tried what friends tried to get theres cheaper and it worked for them and not me, it's game to play around and hopefully the car you like is the cheapest one to insure! my grandad tonight out of interest changed my details from 17 to 20 with 3 years no claims and my quote was just over 600 pounds! just goes to show why so many people are uninsured these days! for the bike when brand new i was paying 850 for it that for 50cc and last year it dropped to 400 you've just got to bit the bullet and get on with it!

I was thinking about doing some advanced rider and driver training but with me having so little money i couldnt afford it. maybe when im working again.
I am paying £500 this year for a honda deauville 650, fully comp. Thats 19yr old, 2 years NCB, in a locked garage, 6000 miles a year. or £250 for TPFT
thing is most people (like me) buy a bike/car then look at insurance (more so for a bike) but if you do it in reverse you could get a good deal. my ducati 750 was £120 to insure last year which is pretty good
