Had my VFR splutter twice now.
Out of the blue whilst riding it the engine won't rev past 6.5k rpm which just happens to be when the Vtec usually kicks in.
Last time I popped the clutch in and it revved no problem. After a few twists of the throttle, re engaged the clutch and everything was fine.
Any ideas please anyone?

The speedo sensor fits over the engine sprocket bolt, have you had a chain & sprockets fitted recently? Electrical connections may need checking/cleaning. "Checked all connections back to the speedometer and they all appeared fine but I gave them the once over anyway. Took off the sensor again and cleaned it. Then I put a similar sized nut as the front sprocket into my cordless screw gun, insert it into the white speed sensor socket, let it rip and hey presto, working. Reckon it was one of the connectors but unable to put my finger on which one."

Could well be the problem, although the FI light was / is coming on sporadically. Might have to invest in a Haynes Manual and take a look at the sensor. Hopefully I won't do more harm than good...

Interesting Dave.
Just ordered a Haynes so might try and take the fairing off next weekend and have a look.

I had a Honda CBR600FS a couple of years ago and the speedo sensor went on it and that caused the FI warning light to come on, although it did still run ok, not sure if it would cause a VFR to go into a limp home mode that would stop you being able to rev the engine.

Well today I decided I was going to investigate the problem.
Took the left hand fairing off and checked the speed sensor connection. Looked like one of the terminals had that white crap that comes out of old leaky AA batteries so cleaned it up and checked the cable back to the sensor.
Took the sensor off and it looked ok. A little worn but ok. Measured the sensor nut length and the distance to the cam nut. I don't think the sensor nut is long enough to engage!!!
So put it back on anyways cause I've no idea what to do now.
Snapped a few fairing clips putting it back on just to round the day off.

Then …
In a last desperate act I forced the sensor nut a bit with a screwdriver and it moved down its little shaft and was long enough to engage with the cam nut.
Oh what a glorious moment it was when I straddled the bike and set off to see the speedo working again!!!!!
I'm off to throw one from the wrist followed by beer.

Desperate, nuts, Little shaft, Long enough to engage. Had to put my cryptic clue crossword head on there to understand what you were on about. Dont worry about it Kev. Some are growers and some are showers.
Anyway, has it sorted out the Vtec issue as well?
