all bikes are different and require different oil's. i beleive if you follow what is recommended in the workshop manual is the best thing to do. in my case on an aprilia rsv it should be 15w50 semi synthetic and changed at least every 3,500 miles using a good filter ie. k&n high flow.

Due to a rise in cost of 36% for 4 litres and 50% for 1 litre top up of HG fully synthetic oil I have decided to use HG mineral oil which has remained at the same price of £5 per litre.
HG semi-synthetic has also risen in price by 43% for 4 litres and 50% for 1 litre top up.
Have you noticed any increase in the cost of the oil which you or whoever services your bike uses?

+1 for (Kwaker)Steve who collected an oil filter for me.
I'm now sorted to continue changing my oil and filter every 3K miles.

I have used Halfrauds semi for years, in birds and now in the 1400, change oil and filter every 3000 miles no problem, it comes in 5 lt. cans and with my trade card works out cheaper in the long run as it's 3-4 changes over a 8 month summer ? I hope B-A

I have decided to use HG mineral oil. Having covered a fair few miles last weekend, most of which were ridden "progressively" (with high ambient temperatures), I am happy to report that the HG 20W - 50 mineral oil seems to be doing a good job. No topping up required and the motor is still intact!

Have just sent this e-mail to BMW Customer Services:-
"I have recently purchased a new R1200RTSE which has now had it's 600 mile running in service. The running in oil has been replaced with Castrol Fully Synthetic Power1 Racing SAE 10W-50 specification JASO MA-2 / API SL. The BMW Rider's Manual recommends that oil of specification JASO MA / API SF or better is acceptable. Please can you confirm whether or not, using a Fully Synthetic SAE 10W-50 Motorcycle Oil with a specification of JASO MA / API SG not manufactured by Castrol would be acceptable and up hold any potential Warranty claims should a problem arise with the engine."
The reply should be interesting.

halfords semi synthentic (trade card) with genuine filter, changed as per service schedule. for some reason honda do not recommend fully synthentic in blackbirds.

Here's the reply from BMW:-
"Thank you for your recent enquiry regarding your BMW R1200 RTSE. The network of Motorrad Approved Dealerships in the UK are our customer facing technical representatives. I would recommend that you contact the Service Department at your local Motorrad Dealership, who will be best placed to answer your query."
