ive just read right through that and feel genuinely sorry for all the owners. I also find it incredible that a manufacturer with such a good past reputation can go backwards like this. One guy on that forum has an 80's bike with 160k miles on it. those with the newer machines that are failing must be so annoyed especiall given the cost of these bikes !

I think part of the problem is that, because of the recent explosion in popularity of BMW's, their QC has not been as good as it once was. They'll have had to seriously scale their supply chain and quality seems to have suffered for it. That said, a couple of winging posts on a forum shouldn't be taken as experience for all owners. For one that bleats, you'l have thousands of happy owners that don't bleat. Mind you BMW's service when it does go pear shaped is absolutely top notch.

have you had any problems with yours andrew? i know davids RT is on its second engine 150 miles and the front shock failed, dripping oil over the from tyre Phoned BMW assist when I got back to the office and within an hour they had recovered the bike and dropped off a loan car ( ). That was on a friday afternoon. Tuesday, they dropped the bike back off for me (freshly washed) and picked up the loan car. PITA that the shock failed, but you can't fault the service. Tilstons wouldn't have done that! It does give you a feeling that if the bike breaks down you've got good backup. Six months and 10,000 miles later it's been fine. That's an f800gs that's been slated on the ukgser posts btw, not a r1200gs.

oh well its not all bad news then. Im sure that "the long way down" has had a massive influence on bmw sales, for many years they have had a bomb proof reputation do you think its possible that the sudden high demand for them is the reason for the "slip" in quality control ? Years back it was unheard of for something this prestigious to fail so commonly

My own feeling is that a large part of it is down to the recent explosion in sales that they've had.
New suppliers will have been sourced, current suppliers made to drastically up production, all leading to QC problems.
Still no excuse though.
