There's a lovely lady at work who's got a shaft drive 1987 Intruder 400 (or some cruiser, I forget what), she can get first gear and neutral, but no others. 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, just kills the bike.
I know bugger all about shafties, so can anybody shed some light on this?

by kills the bike im guessing you mean it actually has all gears as in it will click into them but just cuts out when you click up into second ? if so the most likely cause is a combination of dodgey neutral switch and clutch or sidestand switch

I'll have to double check with her, but I believe she said it just won't go up, and it cuts out when she tries.

if it wont go up then it will most likely have something to do with the gear change mechanism in the engine, depending on how it is set up inside the engine it may be an easy fix

It doesn't sound like the shaft but have a look and make sure there's oil in the shaft housing/wheel hub. Also look for any filings in the oil. If all good then keep looking at the front.

I'm not sure what's going on with the bike at the minute, I've not seen Sue in ages, what with holidays and hospital appointments.
Next time I see her I'll see what if she's made any headway with it.
