I don't think I will ever be worried about run in new engines but if I had that chance I would try to keep the warranty valid.

I don't think I will ever be worried about run in new engines but if I had that chance I would try to keep the warranty valid. My point exactly. The warranty that comes with your bike - it's priced in with everything else. It costs you money and, by keeping your machine within the regulation service schedule, it helps to maintain the value of your bike when you sell it on. If you invalidate your warranty by ignoring the running-in period, you are then less likely to adhere to the service schedule, as you have already invalidated the warranty that you would normally protect by sticking to the service schedule. To my Yorkshire purse strings, that's like buying a bike then taking bits off that you don't think you'll really need and throwing them in a skip. You wouldn't chuck away the fairings on your brand new machine, why chuck away the warranty?

How would they know that you've not run it in as per their instruction? EDIT: That emoticon wasn't the frowning geezer it was the shoulder shrugging 'i dunno' three question mark guy. This phone is strange!

If you're lucky, they wont. If you manage to destroy your brand new, Quality Inspected before it left the factory (and they have the documentation to prove it, because it's worth it's weight in gold), engine by red-lining it inappropriately and blowing it up within 48 hours of delivery, they're going to suspect that something is a little bit amiss. And the amount of clever telemetry they can put on bikes nowadays, I'd suspect that, if they haven't done it already, we're not far off having production bikes that will record your riding style, maximum revs achieved since the last service, top speed, etc. and maybe even report the info back to the manufacturer via built-in mobile broadband. All it takes is for the cost of implementation to be less than the saving made by the manufacturer when your own bike grasses you up!
