Ron and I currently use cobra bike to bike communication but may need to replace these as I have snapped the jack to the headphone lead inside the handset. We have already had to replace the earpiece lead after that became damaged. Does anyone use bike to bike communication and if so what do you recommend. Ron and I initially went for the cheaper option when we first began riding but will now consider the more expensive systems if they would suit our needs better.

Most of the bike to bike coms kit isn't worth the price they put on them for the small range they have. Get your old one fixed. I can also have a look at for you if you want. As a fully licensed radio amateur I know my radio kit

But you know that the best plans never work cos someone always throws a spanner in the works

Thanks MUD You've got a couple of choices Rich, First is bluetooth, this consists of two headsets and mics, one for each lid. Beware of buying cheap - you WILL buy twice with this sort of kit. The defacto standard for bluetooth kits seems to be the Scala Rider. www.amazon.co.uk/Scala-Rider-SOLO-Motorcycle-Handsfree/dp/B000O10BBS/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1303908304&sr=8-2The upside with these is that they are (relatively) cheap. The downside is that they can be fiddly to use and don't do distance well - 150 metres or so and they struggle. The second is bike to bike radio (pmr). The traditional way to do this is by using an Autocom (or Starcom) unit wired up to a radio which is activated over vox or through a press to talk switch with your better half using the other radio through an earpiece. You can also get it so that the radio has a direct lead into a headset via a ptt switch. We're due a coffee and a catch up - I'll pop over and show you mine which will give you an idea.

You could just use two radios (the walkie talkie kind) and put a mic and headphone setup into them, cheap and it gets the job done

What sort of mic and headset? You may get away with it if you can source some cheapos that have a vox headset but.... Beware of buying cheap - you WILL buy twice with this sort of kit.

I was meaning getting a decent set of radios and using one of the autocomm style headsets that incorporate the headset and the mics, its not a "cheap" setup per say but it ends up cheaper than a full autocomm especially if its only for ocassional use

We have them for three years now and are perfectly happy with them apart from the fact that I have snapped a jack inside the handset The range is fine when we are riding together but not too good when out in a group as bigron tends to up towards the front with me miles behind When we first got them we did have the odd problem with wind causing the radios to cut in but that is remedied by setting the sensitivity at the right level. The rechargeable batteries have a really good life with the radios lasting a full days ride with spare life at the end of the day. You have to remember to say something BEFORE what you are actually saying otherwise your other half will only get half what you say. bigron regularly pauses for a second causing the radio to cut out then he starts talking again and I miss the critical part usually of which way I'm supposed to be going sometimes think he's doing it deliberately to get me lost
