Difficult one this, i would just start at the tail light checking for corrosion, shorts etc and work my way back. It could just be as simple as a dodgy earth connection.

What maverick said.
If an electrical circuit starts behaving wierdly then it's almost certainly down to a poor earth.

They will never have any problems on aircraft or satellites after initial take-off then ?
Will the Earth not be poor after the election ?
I,ve always wondered how they will ever do any electric welding on the moon 'cos the earth lead would have to be very long.

tail light voltage is reaching the back light, but its also reaching the stop light without a switch being made. Im gonna go for the earth return on the tail lamp being broken/dis or corroded. Voltage working its way round the bulb base and returning to earth via the stop light element.
Throw in a bit of white corrosion/water ingress on the bulb bases (probably the stop light) and that wont work either, Id also make a point of checking the fuses for both circuits (but I doubt eeither will have blown)

I tried that once but when I worked my way back from the tail light I found that I was working on the headlight of the bike parked behind

My money is on a stuck micro switch. If anything is going to go wrong it's moving parts. Try disconnecting the rear brake switch as it's more likely to covered in dirt or corrosion. Working with lights off is unusual...

Working with lights off is unusual... thats why i dont think its a switch. If it was, the stop light would be on all the time (with or without the tail light). Im of the understanding that the stop light is coming on with the tail light but wont work when the head/tail lights are switched off. It sounds like something that happens on my old series three landy! It ll be something daft thats for sure

have you figured it out yet alan ? not had time today, and by the time i got back from Hartlepool my fingers were numb lol!! so i will try and get it sorted in the morning! cant risk riding too much with it like this, i did check the rear brake connections and all was ok, so i will strip the back end off and check from there!
