A rider taking part in a major road racing event at Oliver’s Mount was killed after losing control of his motorbike.
Scarborough Police officers are appealing for spectators at the racing circuit to contact them following the death of the 38-year-old man at the Cock o’the North Continental Road Races yesterday.
The man from Lincolnshire, who has not yet been named, sustained serious injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced dead on arrival at Scarborough Hospital.
The crash, which happened at around 6pm, is being treated as a single vehicle collision and occurred at the bottom straight of the circuit where the rider lost control of his motorcycle and came to rest in a field.
Racing was suspended at the circuit while police collision investigators examined the scene of the crash.
Officers are appealing to spectators who witnessed the crash or the moments leading up to it to get in touch. They are particularly keen to trace any video footage which fans may have taken at the time.
Traffic Sergeant Pete Wood, who is investigating the incident, said: “It is vital that we establish what caused this tragic event. Fan’s video footage could be extremely valuable in determining the sequence of events which led to the collision. I’m therefore appealing for anyone who can assist us to get in touch as soon as possible.”
