Hello. I recently inquired about a trike and it was based on a reliant engine and had the reliant number plate from the 1970's on the back. I asked if the bike needed or had been for an SVA (unsure what they call it) and the owner said no. I am asking as I know some one who had taken a trike for its MOT and it was refused a the test as it did not look like a Reliant super robin ( as stated on the V5) and on the computer. The trike has no resemblance to a robin reliant apart from the vin attached by a weld and the original engine. So if anyone can help me out as I am looking to buy one but they are quite a few not registered as a trike but as a tricycle using the robin reliant V5 etc. Thanks in advance

I wouldn't touch one with someone else's bargepole. Do you really want to get rid of a nice bike for some shonky old reliant that was shit before it was ripped to pieces and bodged back together by someone with a very large beard?
You'll be lucky if it gets you past the end of your street without exploding in a ball of flames let alone through an mot.
Ride the bike you've got and wear a wrist support.

Avoid like the plague fella .... Seriously.
A bodged trike will set you back a fortune, could be illegal and could take your life.

If its still got robin reliant or similar on the V5 then its not legal. If the chassis is unmodified than there is still the posibility of registering it as a trike, but if the original front wheel/suspension has been changed for forks and the chassis changed there is no chance.
Years ago you could put trikes/kit cars on the road using the details of the donor car but should have changed the V5 details to match but a lot didnt. When the SVA (Now IVA) came in at some point after that they had an amnesty on incorrectly registered kit cars where you could change the details on the V5 to match what the car was. At the end of the amnesty they would no longer allow the changes to be made. I think there is still the possibility if you provide proof that the car was one the road as the trike/kit car for a long time previous to the SVA coming in. These days MOT stations are required to check the identity of the vehicle come MOT time and if it doesnt match then refuse to MOT it and the DVLA will end up revoking the V5 forcing the owner to IVA their car. This has caused a rise in ringing cars in the kit car market, people having been building new cars using parts from an older kit car (Usually a dutton) and then copying the chassis number onto the new chassis. You see loads of them popping up on eBay and then the un-registered Duttons appearing for sale aswell, I believe the Dutton Owners club members enjoy spotting them on the internet and reoprting them to the DVLA for fun.

Theres companies out there, that will take your bike and convert it for you.
If the trike is to stay bike/trike with bolt on axle and swinging arm to the bikes original swinging arm mounts, the bike does not need any SVA/IVA test at all. Just fill in log book and classification change, you "could" get an appointment made for you, to your local DVLA office for a viewing of your trike just to assertain it is a bike/trike. Everything is, as the bike manufacturer has made it, just with bolt on parts.
Id keep away from that reliant based trike, just because of reliability issues with it.
Anything can be modernised, including reliant`s. (legally) My mate had an old reliant bond bug 3 wheeler(trike) fitted some sort of motorbike engine fitted. He`s on with converting a smart car and putting a CBR1000 engine into it. He got the chain drive differential from ..www.westwalestrikeshack.co.uk/trike-kits.php..
He`s an MOT tester.
If you havent ridden a trike before, Id advise having a test ride bud, they are awkward at 1st and not everyones cup of tea.

Buy a bike with cruise control, like a... Oh yes - Ducati 1200 Multistrada Or a Diavel! No pressure on your wrist, then. Seriously, though, I don't much like the sounds of those trike jobbies... Sound a bit iffy to me. Especially when there are some real nice ones out there like this, not as cruiser-y as most. It'll probably be just as bad for your wrist, though. Depends what kind/style of trike you're after?

There are some nice home built trikes out there ,but there a lot more crap,if its got the original Relient VIN on it ,don't touch it ,it will come back and bite you in the arse legally ,in the future,I seen it happen. When I was younger you used to see harris's and rickmans with the original reg no,when a friend of mine did one he kept the reg from the 1978 Z1000,only because he used most of the parts of z1000,onto the Rickman kit
