I fudgin' hate technology... So over the last few weeks my laptop's been a royal pain in the arse, and developed a some problems. 1) Randomly disconnecting from the internet and seems to think there's no connections available... When there is. The only way I can rectify this is by putting it into sleep mode and then waking it up, where it'll connect by itself, buuuuuut the problem with that is... 2) Sometimes it won't shut down, restart, or enter sleep mode. Leaving me no option but to hold down the power button, this happens several times a day, and that's going to completely fcuk it up eventually. I think it could be a problem with the windows update, because that keeps failing. I've tried several Windows hotfix's which have been successful, but ultimately not fixed the problem. I did consider backing everything needed up (which I have done), and reformatting the whole shebang, but I can't find the box the laptop came in and thus the disk that came with it... If it even had one. And, like a typical muppet, I didn't make any backup disks. I've heard you can reformat Windows 7 with a partition, but I don't know what this means and I just don't want to lose Photoshop which came pre-installed. Basically.... I haven't a clue what to do, and it's going to windup shagged if I keep forcing it to power off. Any help from you techies would be much appreciated. Attached is the update log.

A little help with your error issue here: windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows7/Windows-Update-error-8024200dSome laptops have a hidden partition (disc section is all it means) with recovery tools, apps and sometimes even a version of the OS that just needs activating. Maybe try and get the updates applied first before trying anything else. I'm not convinced the Wifi problem is link to the updates however, have you tried running the connection wizard when problems arise? IF you have a software/system problem then I doubt backing it all up or even cloning your drive will be of help, you'd just copy the problem and have it again next time around. Sounds like a full reformat and install might be a best option. If you have your product keys / code for Windows and/or your Photoshop you might be able to re-install ok. Might be one for a shop,if the above fails...

I've tried everything that website suggests I think the main issue is finding out what's preventing the laptop from shutting down or entering sleep mode, because the rest is just an inconvenience. The update is un-get-able. Nothing I've tried has been able to get that to work. No antivirus or anything to prevent it. Even having run Microsoft's automatic troubleshooter only for it to come up with nothing. So, really, I need to get that laptop box found. The key that's on the bottom of the laptop itself is well worn off now, dunno if that'd be an issue? As for what's backed up it's literally just media and documents, backed up prior to all of these going on. So I can't imagine there to be anything bad included. Can't say I want to take it into the shop, because I resent paying for it to be repaired when it shouldn't have gone wrong in the first place, and I don't trust the barstewards to not snoop.

Make the most of it Rik, cos when you're 53 you'll be fcuked! When something goes wrong with my computers I either throw them away, or, I learned some techie stuff once and I was able to reset the computer to a date about 3 or 4 weeks prior. I know, it's not a permanent fix, but it gets me by until it goes wrong to the point I can't do that any more. I use one of these I pad things now. Marvellous......... But, I should really spur myself on to get an external hard drive for my lap top to save photo's and documents. Good luck....

Sorry your probs are continuing but I do think you are on the right track with your main issue being the S/D or sleep prob. Oddly I have this too. If my account is running on the PC it crashes when I try to put it to sleep. If only the better-halves account is running it goes to sleep fine. I was told it was an driver/extension issue - I used a crash advisor prog (Who Crashed www.resplendence.com/download/whoCrashedSetup.exe) and that couldnt locate the problem, might be worth a shot...

I've found that if I "Log Off" first, then "Install Updates and Shut Down" then it works fine. Just gotta turn the automatic sleep function thingie off. Thanks for the help though. I'm going to eventually wipe it, when I find the disk, anyway
