Hi all,
Just got myself an ARC welder set donated ... Excellent. I need molten metal and sparks in my life, and the angle grinder is getting boring.
However, I've never even seen one of these things let alone used one.
So, anyone out there fancy donating some time in exchange for beer / Lager to show me the basics ?
All I'm looking for is how not to electrocute myself, set fire to the garage or melt through the floor. Then I can happily practice the rest on my tod.

Not sure mate - last time I tried to weld somethimg it looked like a seagull had shat on it from a thousand feet.
Maybe try the local colleges - they often have evening classes that include welding.

I had a go recently. Despite doing two years as an apprentice plater, it wasn't as easy as I remember. My set is a bit Mickey Mouse, but it is new. I think with stick welding, it's quite important to make sure the rods are properly dry. If left laid about in the garage, they absorb moisture and they put a whole new meaning to the term "stick welding" Pop them in the oven on a low setting for two hours prior to use. The difference is crystal clear when you use them. If you need any rods, give me a shout, I've got loads

Cheers Lee, Got given about 20 boxes of various sparklers when I got the welder. Not short of kit just short of aptitude !

Have you got a auto darkening welding mask .this makes it far easier to see the job before you arc up .Google,YouTube it also it's easier if it's your first time cut the welding rod in half rod sizes 1.6/2/2.5 mm better to practice with =retired plater\welder good luck

Good to see you back Ron

Sticking bits of metal to other bits of metal is really fun, however I wouldn't suggest just plugging it in and attacking some meta you'll end up sealing yourself in when you go for the garage door
