Been out on the old slabby 1100 gsxr today and after a vigorous acceleration onto the A19 i have now found that my bike dies after about 800yrds. Took it home to find that i cant check the plugs as i don't have the correct tool. I sort of think its a firing issue but i'm quickly getting to the limit of my knowledge on this. so any help in diagnosing the problem or volunteers of coming round to mine and helping me out would be great. Unlimited amounts of tea for anybody who fancies getting all oily. What makes matters worse is that i was really looking forward to the sunday ride out. hope its an easy fix.

so... after spending a bit of time reviewing my Haynes manual. I've got to the point where I think its an issue of poor running or no power at high speed and low speed.
I've had the tank off, unplugged and re-plugged (?) the HT leads and taken it out for a test ride and everything seemed ok. No breaking down which was good.
However I still think there's a firing issue and I cant get to the plugs to check them. So... if anybody has the right tool for the job then I would appreciate the help.

i use a normal plug socked to lossen the plugs then a magnet or a piece of pipe to withdraw the plug from the seat, its a faff but achievable

yeah i've got the pipe ready but the plugs are quite deeply recessed and the socket i have doesnt get even close enough to loosen them. Had it out for a run again and the problem has reappeared.

lots of things get put down to electrical faults that are actually fuel system.
Bad fuel, choked vents, kinked lines and water in the tank or carbs are all common issues.
good luck.
PS - give a hint at your location & I'm sure someone will be able to help

cheers guys, i've checked fuses and had a cursory glance at the air filter. This model is known for kinked fuel lines but i've had the tank up and down and been careful to make sure they were ok. As it happened directly after the vigorous (replace for redline) acceleration i'm worried i've damaged something expensive. Oh, btw i live in nunthorpe, middlesbrough.

Does your gix have exup cables? At the risk of sounding like a total novice, what are they? possibly

they are attached to a servo which is attached to your throttle and opens and shuts a valve in the exhaust, your probs sound similar to what i had, I had to buy new cables, i also went to plugs/carbs/ fuel first

Its attached to the tank, the manual says to empty the tank to remove the tap that houses the filter. I'm considering that however i'd like to check the plugs as a first port of call if i can. Gonna have a proper look through the manual tonight and see what i can do tomorrow.

Cheers alan, i may have to take you up on that, +1 I've had a chat with someone regarding the fuel filter issue and there is a way to check that without taking the bike to bits. Apparently, if i run the bike on reserve and the issue goes away it could indicate a blockage at the top of the filter. Also, if i switch to PR1 (i'm told this circumvents the filter altogether) then that would indicate if it is the filter. So im going to try that out today and if it is indicating a filter issue then i'll get busy emptying the tank and removing the tap etc. wish me luck

MY understanding of a fuel tap which has three positions, i.e. FUEL, RES. & PRI. is that on Fuel & Res., the petrol is drawn out of the tank using a vacuum system as opposed to gravity feed on Pri.
Yes, you are right about the fuel filter which is an integral part of the tap and using the Res. may indicate a partially blocked filter.
Before you pull it apart, check that any vacuum hoses are all connected correctly and not split or holed.

Cheers dave i'll do that.
Just had it out for a blast and tried it on 'on' and 'res'.
While in the 'on' position the problem came back after about 400yrds and while in the 'res' position i had no issues at all. responsiveness was good, engine sounded healthier etc.
so it looks like i'm going to have to get messy.
If anyone fancies a cuppa then your more than welcome to pop over, just pm me and i'll send you my number. ;D

ok, so tank off, emptied and fuel filter out. Now i'm confused as it seems ok, no obvious blockages.
