No way of knowing unless you throw it on a dyno. Only option really is to do the airbox mod and then check the plug colour to see if it is running lean. If it does, alter the jetting.
To be honest, if you want to increase the performance, you would be well advised to pay for the dyno runs and rejetting.

If it's FI, the chances are he will need a Power Commander or some other device to remap the injection system.

Hi i get my drz next week am thinking about opening the airbox but i know it will need rejetting just wondering were will do this or how much would be cheers Drz 400 has a carb , so could be re jetted ! Fitting big mainjets is my thing but these bikes don't need em at all. But , I've had one for years ( well 2 of them actually since 2001) . Do not modify the air box is my recommendation ! They are perfectly fine as standard ! If you cut a huge hole in the box your inviting pesky bumble bees , stones , water and boddy parts to be sucked into the engine. A well maintained drz will go up or down anything when off road and gives ample road performance too ( IMHO )

Depends what you want to do ?
If off road is your thing then fit good off road tryres and gear it down a little bit ( bigger rear sprocket or larger from one ) . Stiffen up the rear shock to make it taller. Change the handle bars for renthals and that's it . I always use super unleaded too . Keep the air filter clean . Comes off by removing the left hand side plastic cover. Wash air filter in petrol. Replace when dry after every off road ride out.
On road . Fit sticky on road tyres and lower rear shock a bit to drop back end down . Leave on standard gearing ( good enough for about 105 mph on my mates long drive ). There is s baffle deep in the exhaust which can be drilled out with a really long drill . Doesn't make that much difference though.
Look out for a silencer off s drz400e ! That's the enduro spec one . Fits straight on and is a bit louder and let's bike breathe a little easier .
That's about it really. They're great bikes !

just sold a e model one , the sm model is heavier with the metal tank and clock and indicators ,and slower , the e model has higher compression , you can fit the better carb from the e model and get a full arrow system for it , will make it quicker and a bit louder ;D .still wont be as quick as the e model though ,lots fo fun though this was mine
