Ok i know this is going to sound stupid but !!! I have always checked the tension sat on the bike ,whilst checking the handbook for my xjr1300,it says check on the centerstand .So i thought lets google it and ......no help as both methods are favoured ,some even using both ?? Including one from a mechanic who sticks a 8mm screwdriver in between the chain and sprocket then moves it till it makes the chain solid before adjusting ?? . So at the risk of sounding daft over one of the simplest tasks i wondered what the advice on here was.

I do mine with no weight on it, however I do like to run mine on the slightly tight side.

I'd go with the handbook. Yamaha's knowledge of the bike is far greater than ours...

I always understood the you check the tension while sat on the bike ,because obviously when riding the tension must take into account the weight of the rider ,this differs when checking with no weight on the center stand surely. So maybe i have been doing it all wrong for the last 30 plus years
