As some of you are aware, I've recently invested in a 1999 twist n go scooter for my son Jacob, who is 16 in November. Jake is a typical teen, grouchy and always asleep. Useless at fixing anything...the time has come for him to learn. The bike was dropped off a couple of days ago by steve from Crofton court MC's
The machine starts great, has good tyres and has an MOT.
All good stuff, its got a few faults though, fuel guage doesnt work (there is no trip meter so its needed) a lot of the panels have been damaged and the repairs look very "teenage"
I started taking it to bits with jake last night, its all simple enough. Obviously, we dont have any form of book to go by, so, especially with the wiring, its all about hand chasing and looping the circuits with a fluke.
The plan is to sort out the faults, repair the panels, give it a lick of paint and have it ready and "tricked up" in time for his birthday.

oh yes, its got to be done on a budget! The fuel guage was not working.. it still isnt. Ive chased all the wiring and it checked out fine. No shorts or open circuits. The difficult thing is working out which wire does what. There is no manual and the only labelling is in chinese!
The sender unit was removed and sure enough, moving the float arm showed a change in resistance, it was then connected back in line and the guage began to work again.. put the sender back into the tank and it stopped working !
Turns out that the float attached to the arm has actually absorbed fuel and will no longer float, so i need either a new sender unit, or a replacement float.
Once this is done, the guage will work.

the stripdown continued today. Jacob was introduced to seized nuts and bolts whilst removing the front mudguard ive raked all the crap out from the motor. Sorted out all the ropey wiring and secured anything that was missing fasteners The exhaust, hub and rear wheel were all rusted up. A few hours with the drill and wire wheel attachment and a coat of BBQ paint for the exhaust/ smootherite for the wheel/hub paid dividends.. Thats enough for the day...time to ride now!
