After yesterday's 143 mile ride out, filled the bike up today and did a fuel consumption check. It returned 49.5 MPG, with a tank capacity of 19.5 l, less a reserve of 3.8 l, leaves 15.7 l before it hits reserve. 15.7 l is 3.45 gal and at 49.5 MPG gives a range of 171 miles. I'll have to put a power commander on and get it dyno tested, it's just not good enough.

Going back to last year when I was riding home from Bikewise at Durham, I've been unhappy with the front end on the bike. Getting a "Tank Slapper" on, on a motorway is not much fun, (David Nightingales01 will vouch for that). Decided to drop the front wheel out and pop down to C&S to have the wheel balance checked. All previous balance weights had dropped off, and the wheel needed 45g (attached near the tyre valve) to balance it. Hopefully this will be £5 well spent, thanks to Dean at C&S.

Whilst the front wheel was out, I decided to drop the forks out and replace the oil. Checked my service record book and it is over 7 years and 3,500 miles since it was last changed, (the service interval is 4,000 miles). It's probably easier to do this with the forks out of the bike, than it is to "monkey" around with them on the bike. (Checked fork spring free length was within specification). The top yoke was slackened off and fork legs repositioned, making it easier to re-install the wheel etc. The front brake and forks now feel much better.

Whilst at Clarkes Motorcycles, David had a look at the front brakes. He suggested that replacing the 30 year old, original brake hoses may improve the feeling of the front brake. Obviously the brake fluid (9 years old), would be changed at the same time, this in itself may improve matters. Have asked for a price to supply and fit the new hoses. Been to Clarkes today, David supplied & fitted stainless steel black braided front brake hoses (3 off) for £95.

On the way to Clarkes, BOB's Bike was running like a bag of sh*t.
David diagnosed that No.3 cylinder was not firing, he checked the temperature of the exhaust pipes (by hand) and No.3 was not as hot as the others.
The plug caps were checked, David got a belt off No.3, therefore it looks like I need to change the spark plug.
The plugs were last changed at 24,000 miles and checked as OK at 28,000 miles. The service interval is "Inspect/Clean or replace as required every 2,000 miles". I think I will replace all 4 spark plugs at 31,000 miles.

Removed all 4 spark plugs, No. 3 has sooty deposits which indicates either an over-rich fuel/air mixture, or a malfunctioning ignition system. No. 4 & 3 Spark Plugs Spark Plugs 1 to 4, left to right. With all 4 plugs removed, did an ignition check and all 4 were sparking, but were a bit weak. Will go ahead and replace all 4.

The RHS indicators are a bit hit and miss, looks like some investigations are required.
David (Clarkes), had applied electrical contact cleaner to the LHS handlebar switch.
Checked them this morning, they appear to be working, so I think I will leave well alone.

(Have ordered new replacement seals, together with the ones for the cylinder head, you can't run a bike without an exhaust system). Collected parts ordered from Clarkes today, together with genuine Yamaha oil filter and 'O' rings, all for £39.

Yes, the brakes are better, nice solid feel to the brake lever, no sponginess and the forks dip when the brake is applied. From a safety point of view, 30 year old hoses are probably not a good idea.

Oxford Sports Heated Grips fitted today, thanks to MSG and 2WS.
Still a slight problem with No.3 cylinder not firing properly when idling.

BOB's Bike had a good wash today after it's recent excursions, need to go over it with a rag and some ACF-50.
No.3 Cylinder still not firing correctly at idle speed, have ordered some new spark plug caps.
Taking the simple process of elimination route to diagnose the fault.

How do you do all the intricate fiddly parts with a rag? I'm tempted to do mine

Hmm I don't know. The acf50 people used a fine mist spray don't they, David says his way is just as good though. I might see what bobs bike looks like first.
