Engine oil & filter plus final gear oil changed today, (31,000 miles). Hit 32,000 miles over the weekend, time for another Engine oil & filter plus final gear oil change.

Job done.
The cam chain has also been tensioned, the spring loaded plunger could be heard and felt to move.
Hopefully this will reduce the engine noise and improve the valve timing.

Ideally, I would like the mixtures set up using exhaust gas analysis equipment. Having spoken to Simon at AMR Bellerby, I have decided to go down the route of WG analysis. Hopefully soon, thanks to help from Mr Chaindrive and Tony(c), I will be in position to get the bike booked in with Simon at AMR.

Collected 2 off front pipes from Mr Chaindrive this evening, Dave had removed the sample point bolts which I couldn't.
One was seized and I didn't want to neck off the head like I had done on the other. Dave welded a nut or two onto the necked off one and job done, cheers mate.
Will put pipes back on and get it booked into AMR.
Dave also provided a sample point fitting together with copper tube for use at AMR.

After yesterday's 143 mile ride out, filled the bike up today and did a fuel consumption check. It returned 49.5 MPG, with a tank capacity of 19.5 l, less a reserve of 3.8 l, leaves 15.7 l before it hits reserve. 15.7 l is 3.45 gal and at 49.5 MPG gives a range of 171 miles. I'll have to put a power commander on and get it dyno tested, it's just not good enough. I'll be filling BOB's Bike up before the ride on Sunday, will have done 190 miles, should be interesting to do a MPG check. It's just not good enough, wait until it has been to AMR.

I must say a big thanks to Simon at AMR Bellerby, he has breathed some new life into BOB.
All the carb. mixtures were set up individually using WG analysis and re-balanced.
Simon spent nearly 2 hours on it and I was very happy with the price paid for the result obtained.

A couple of months ago, I decided to do some investigating, there was a niggling oil leak from the cylinder head.
I removed the cylinder head and took it to Auto Services in Thornaby to be checked.
It was not flat, they skimmed the head for me (taking off 0.006"), it was then refitted, job done, no leaks.

Set about doing an engine service today, (34,000 miles in 31 years).
Checked valve clearances, one is a bit tight, found this YouTube clip on how to adjust valve clearances:-
Spark plugs checked, all the same and a good colour indicating correct air/fuel mixtures.
Spark Plugs renewed.
Air Filter renewed.
Engine Oil & Filter, together with Final Drive Oil replaced.
Cam Chain tension checked.
Will take bike to Simon at AMR Bellerby to have Carbs. balanced and Cylinder Compressions checked.

just need to sort the burning smell now Are you referring to the smell of Castrol R. Apparently, some people riding behind me thought it smelt like a Speedway Bike. Here is a quote from Castrol:-"We are often asked about the best way to obtain the Castrol R odour and from our discussions we are aware that many people add a small amount to their fuel. Just how much seems to be an inexact science, but generally the less you can get away with the better. You might like to start with 1000:1 fuel:R ratio (20ml of R in a 20 litre fuel tank) and see how that works, adding more oil if there is insufficient effect. I would suggest if you get as far as 100:1 (200ml of oil in a 20 litre fuel tank) and still aren’t getting the effect you want, you might want to re-consider the benefits versus the downsides!"

Checked valve clearances, one is a bit tight. Removed the old shim, identified which thickness will be required to restore the correct clearance.

The Filter was last replaced 6,000 miles ago. It shows how dirty they get and the benefit of replacing them.
