BOB's Bike had a good wash today after it's recent excursions, need to go over it with a rag and some ACF-50. How do you do all the intricate fiddly parts with a rag? I'm tempted to do mine The ACF-50 can be warmed on a radiator or in hot water to help it atomize better for spraying, an extension tube/straw is also available, ACF-50 creeps into the nooks and crannies.

Can you do some before and after pics with the acf50? ACF-50 is applied sparingly, it's just like a thin layer of oil. You won't see anything in a photo, it will just look clean and shiny.

No.3 Cylinder still not firing correctly at idle speed, have ordered some new spark plug caps. Taking the simple process of elimination route to diagnose the fault. New spark plug caps fitted, No.3 Cylinder has improved, if nothing else, the caps look better in black rather than red. Perhaps a plug colour check after the motor has been idling for a while will confirm things. Did find a slight break in the rubber waterproofing boot between the HT lead and plug cap on No.3 Cylinder. The screw in the plug cap also looked a bit dull compared to the others. Don't think I'll be rushing to get the carbs. pulled to bits for cleaning, will see how things go.

Perhaps a plug colour check after the motor has been idling for a while will confirm things. Decided to do just that today, fired the bike up and allowed it to idle for a while without touching the throttle. Removed all 4 spark plugs and if anything No.3 cylinder looked a better colour than the other three. All cylinders/exhaust header pipes were hot and the throttle response seemed crisp. If I'm looking for more accurate fuel/air mixture settings then a gas analyser will be required to monitor the exhaust gases during adjustment.

The RHS indicators are a bit hit and miss, looks like some investigations are required. Handlebar switch removed, cleaned with electrical contact cleaner and lubricated with ACF-50.

Might Bob make an entrance this year David.... ;D I believe BOB has a new owner now, I'd have to get some weight off to squeeze into those leathers again.

The above photograph was taken over 20 years ago, (circa 1990), after I had renovated the bike.
The leathers were made to measure around the same time when I was ridiculously thin at 10.5st.

Took the seat off today to get it recovered at Coverall in Stockton.
Fired the bike up and No.3 cylinder exhaust pipe did not get hot at idle speed. After talking to 2WS, I have decided to remove the carb's and take them to 2WS at Darlington for cleaning.
The exhaust gets hot when the engine speed is increased, so hopefully the problem is with the carb's and not the ignition system, time will tell.

Got the carb's off, ready to go to 2WS.
The fuel drained out of the float bowls had a small amount of sediment in it, this may point to the problem.

Carb's cleaned but unfortunately the problem on No.3 cylinder still seems to exist.
There is no doubt that after 31 years they needed cleaning.
Need to take the bike out for a run and see how I get on.

Carb's balanced and compression check completed by 2WS.
As of yesterday, still not firing on No.3 cylinder from cold at idle speed.
Decided to check out the ignition system, swapped the HT leads between Nos. 2 & 3 cylinders. No.3 still not firing and No.2 OK, therefore the ignition is not the problem.
Adjusted the mixture screw on No.3 carb, the idle speed picked up and the exhaust got hot.
The engine now idles when hot without cutting out.
The proof will be if all four cylinders are OK from cold this morning.
Ideally, I would like the mixtures set up using exhaust gas analysis equipment.
